Hey Guys!!! I went to Lake Whitney this weekend and brought this home for one of my lucky young scientists.
Here's how you win it.........
* tell us what a fossil is
* look this one up and tell us its name
* if it's found at Lake Whitney, how old do scientists think it is? (yes, it is valuable)
* once you know what kind of fossil this is, tell us what this means about this part of Texas......what used to be here?
Get THREE of the four questions right and take home this museum piece.
MS.Lewis, a fossil is a special rock that takes anywere from thousands to millions of years to form.Fossils are special because they are remains or traces of animals, plants, and other organisms from the remote past.
ReplyDeleteYea Dylan - you got the first question correct. That IS the definition of a fossil.
ReplyDeleteJust two more answers to go. How old is this particular fossil? You can even tell me the time period it is from and that will count.
Because of this type of fossil, what was Texas like at that time?
Can you give the name of this type of circular shaped fossil?
JUST TWO MORE ANSWERS TO GO!!!
Ms.Lewisa fossil is the impression in a rock of the petrified remains of an organism or animal.
ReplyDeleteMs.Lewis is this a sea shell?
ReplyDeleteEbony - you are almost there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteJust one more question to go and you are the winner.
ReplyDeleteWasn't sure this got posted- Sending this again.
ReplyDeleteThis a called a ammonite fossil.
Ammonite fossils can be found at Lake whitney & are between 70-150 million years old, ammonites were common sea creatures which swam freely in the sea, they floated up by air inside their shell. They are now extinct.
That would suggest that central Texas was under water 150 million years ago.
Did you know that Texas Hit by Asteroid 58 Million Years Ago - here is the link

And the winner is..............YEA for Dylan. You receive our museum quality piece of scientific history. See you in class today to present your prize.
ReplyDeleteEbony, you did a great job as well. We have a runner's up prize for you.
Thanks to you both for participating and stay posted for the next big scientific puzzle.
