TWO DAY LAB ON CELLS AND MICROSCOPES

DAY ONE:

• Click this link to view a variety of cells. Discuss what type each might be, and why their shape or size might affect their function.  http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/featured/images-inside-human-body-images/8292?image=0

• Microscope station........View four different slides - draw how each cell or tissue appears, write the name of what is in the slide, and write an observation.  

• Onion cell station......follow directions on the station card.  Create your own slide of an onion cell and  a cheek cell. 
• Click on this link and go through the plant and animal cell frames. Be sure to open each link at each screen before clicking "continue".

DAY TWO: 

• As a class, view the Brainpop on Cell Specialization / complete the 10 question quiz.
• Station One: Using microviewers, look at all slides......use the petri dish to trace a circle and draw what you see in each circle.  Write a two sentence observation of each slide to the side of your drawing
• Station Two: click on game time and play the review game - let your teacher see your score before you close the game.

EITHER DAY: Watch the movie on cell organelles, either as a class or with small groups.

REVIEW PART II - TEST ON CELLS AND CELL THEORY

1. What are the three main points of the CELL THEORY?
2. What is an organelle?  What do they do for a cell?
3. Are ALL cells the same......what about shape?......what about size?
4. What parts of organisms are made of cells?
5. Give a brief description of the following cell parts:  cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, mitochondria, Golgi bodies, Endoplasmic Reticulum, vacuoles, chloroplast, ribosomes.  Where is the DNA found in a cell?
6. Identify scientists associated with the cell theory - give two or three words about their contribution.
7. List the levels of cell organization from the one that is most simple to the one that is most complex.
